<>,

As you recall, in the last issue, I had tested out baking soda as a cleanser, for which I found to be surprisingly successful in cutting out the oiliness or grease on my face. It worked great as a cleansing agent, but it was missing an acne-fighting ingredient or two.

Well I’m happy to tell you I’ve done some research combined with some experimenting and have developed a formula I think you will like. I’ve been using it the past few weeks and my skin feels great! Here it is, I’m calling it the Acne Weapon Scrub, named after this very e-zine:

  • 1 tablespoon of honey
  • 2 tablespoons of white sugar
  • 2 tablespoons of lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • ¼ teaspoon olive oil

Mix into a paste. Lemon juice mixed together with baking soda can cause a “fizzing” reaction if combined first. Just let it fizzle out. Use daily or every couple of days. See what it does for you – and let me know, I’d love to hear about your experience!

These ingredients serve a function. As mentioned in the last issue, baking soda works great as a mild exfoliant and cleans and tightens pores. As for the others:
  • Honey – has antibacterial properties and moisturizes
  • Sugar – exfoliates
  • Lemon juice – has antibacterial and toning properties, great for oily skin
  • Olive oil – a good carrier for other ingredients

If you prefer, substitute the sugar for salt (an antiseptic/skin stimulant) or adjust the ingredient portions to work for you. Some people have allergic reactions to fruit acids like lemon juice. You may wish to test this out before actually using it.

Research Alert!

Resistance to Acne Antibiotics is on the Rise, Natural Treatments May be a Better Option

If you have tried antibiotics to fight acne and found they worked for you, consider yourself lucky. There are a number of studies now confirming that bacterial resistance to antibiotics is growing. This means many people are finding that they do not respond to antibiotics or they experience relapses of acne.

What types of antibiotics are bacteria resisting now? Topical and systemic antibiotics like erythromycin, tetracycline, and clindamycin are among the most common.

What does this mean for you? Unfortunately this means that in order for these medications to work, the dosage or concentration must be increased. This of course can lead to more side effects and a host of other problems.

What can be done about it? If you are considering antibiotics, or have tried them but found they did not work, think about taking a more natural approach. Natural methods often do not show results as quickly, but can reward you with longer-term success. If you’d like to know more about natural methods, skip down below.

Today’s Acne Tip:

Shaving Tips for Men

Shave after a shower when your skin is most moist. Shave lightly. Find a good razor that you like, whether it’s electric or something else. I would highly recommend an electric razor that lifts the hair and cuts it.

Soften your beard entirely with soap and water before putting on shaving cream. Although shaving against the grain gives a cleaner shave, you should shave with the grain to avoid cutting any acne.

YOUR questions answered:

Lime Juice for Acne Scars

Question: Can lime juice be used to replace lemon juice for disappearance of acne scars?

Answer: Yes lime juice can be used as well. It's also a citric fruit and has similar natural fruit acids that can kill acne bacteria.
